Residents and visitors to the city of Centerton in Benton County, Arkansas, who need to fly in or out of the area, may wish to know more about the nearest airport which is Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport. This facility is situated in Highfill so it is within easy access of most of the towns and cities in the surrounding area, around 15 miles northwest of Fayetteville and just over 10 miles from Springdale. It was opened towards the end of 1998 and has proven to be a successful replacement for commercial traffic that previously used the ineffective Drake Field aviation facility, despite its small size in comparison to other airports on major US routes. The volume of non-stop daily services to cities across the country is in part due to the presence of Wal-Mart’s HQ in the region as this is one of the largest companies in America today. However one of the major national carriers American Airlines has its regional carrier (American Eagle Airlines) based and operate flights in and out of this airport all year round too. These include non-stop daily flights to and from six major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington DC with over 550,000 passenger boarding’s recorded annually.
There are also a variety of other national and regional carriers operating services from Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport including Allegiant Air who offer flights to Las Vegas as well as Orlando-Sanford and Delta Connection (operated by Express Jet) to Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Memphis although this is seasonal and ends September. The Delta Connection service operated by SkyWest Airlines flies to and from Minneapolis/St.Paul while United Express (also operated by Express Jet) offer flights for Chicago-O’Hare, Denver, Houston-Intercontinental and Newark. Delta Connection also have flights to Atlanta, Cincinnati and Detroit which are operated by Endeavor Air while US Airways Express operate services to and from Charlotte.
The airport itself covers an area of 2,184 acres with two runways, each with a concrete surface measuring 8,800 by 150 feet. However, as a result of the continuing growth of this successful airport, expansion plans were announced in 2007 for the construction of a new concourse to the east of the existing upper concourse at a cost of $25 million. This took three years to complete and enabled the airport to provide additional space for another 8 planes to board along with the existing 12 airplane spaces it had previously. These expansion plans also included further development of the existing ticket counter and the construction of two large warehouses while the upper level concourse also had a moving walkway installed the first of its kind in the state of Arkansas. This has given passengers easier access to security from the last gate which now only takes three minutes, in comparison to the longer time involved in covering this distance previously. The completed expansion added an extra 51,000 square feet to the existing airport facility and included 12 additional gates on the upper level of the east side.
