Many of us enjoy the odd dalliance with lady Luck whether it is with the occasional visit to a casino or a flutter once a year during a day out at the races, while others may opt to indulge in these pursuits more often. Whatever category you come into, Centerton residents and visitors too, will find several options in the surrounding areas if horseracing or gaming appeals to them.
Oaklawn Park in Arkansas’ Hot Springs is the home of some of the best thoroughbred racing in the country and as well as hosting the annual Arkansas Derby and many other sporting events of a similar nature throughout the calendar year. The first racing card was hosted here over a century ago back in 1905 and since then it has developed into one of the premier race meets in the country and the track has seen some of the biggest names in the sport compete here. A visit here is a must for any horseracing fans in the area as you will be sure to see nothing but the best thoroughbred races taking place on one of the most premium tracks in the U.S. one of Oak lawn’s all-time favorites, Zenyatta, was not only the winner of the Apple Blossom Handicap in 2010 but has also won a multitude of honors including Horse of the Year. It is also the venue for the prestigious Racing Festival of the South which starts of the season with multiple stakes races and this is a fun day out that the whole family can enjoy with refreshments and entertainment available throughout the event that include food and drink vendors for snacks or high caliber dining facilities in the exclusive onsite restaurant. Racing competitors and enthusiasts flock to this venue from all over the country to take part in a variety of events such as Razorback Breeders’ Cup Handicap, the Northern Spur Breeders’ Cup and the Oaklawn Handicap. In July 2013, Oaklawn also announced record-breaking stakes schedule which has been increasing rapidly for over a decade now, thanks in part to the popularity of Instant Racing & Gaming across the state. All racing in the state – including thoroughbred horses and greyhounds – is overseen by the Arkansas State Racing Commission who work in collaboration with Oaklawn Jockey Club Racing Track. Together these two organizations ensure that all licensing procedures as well as the rights and regulations of horses, owners, jockeys and breeders as well as those of the public are upheld and operated within the Established through Act 46 of 1957 with the purpose of providing fair and fully legitimate racing action for the pleasure of all concerned.
For those who prefer to get their kicks from a casino with a gamble on a game of black jack, poker or the likes then you will be disappointed to hear that the state of Arkansas still has limited legalized gambling legislation in place. This means that the only permitted forms of gambling are horse and greyhound dog racing and even this is restricted to a specific location, Hot Springs, the home of Oaklawn. If you are living in Centerton or visiting the area, then you will find the closest casinos in Mississippi or Oklahoma.
